Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you a scientific, airtight, 100% reliable way to calculate your social class, and it will take less than a minute of your time. BEHOLD: The Great British Class Calculator:

OK, maybe it isn’t as infallible as I made out. But it’s fun, and the BBC say that they worked with sociologists from leading universities to come up with it (oooooh). Feel free to reply to this blog with the result the test gave you, and whether or not you think it’s a correct assessment.

Mine is…

Emergent service workers

This class group is financially insecure, scoring low for savings and house value, but high for social and cultural factors. According to the Great British Class Survey results, lots of people in this group:

  • Are young
  • Enjoy a cultured social life
  • Rent their home – almost 90%

  1. Peculiar. On one aspect I scored elite which is total b*****ks. On another trad working class, yet I came out as precariat. Yet I think working class is correct. It left out activities like gardening, visiting gardens and historical sites and education, reading and self-improvement. Which is what, anti-rural and anti-education/intellectual? Perhaps this survey is only meant for working age? I suspect being retired skewed my results as I have a low income and rent rather than buy because my income would not support the running costs of a house. But it gives an insight into how we are being defined. Interesting the exclusion of education and broad intellectual interests as a factor.
